Curriculum Vitae-ish
Going backwards, you could say my professional life has taken this kind of trajectory:
Right now, I’m here. I’m also on the Board of this place here. Before doing policy work (which turns out to be totally adorable), what I mostly did was in the field of communications–writing, some audio (podcasting and radio), doing interviews and blogging. Good thing that policy and comms are two great tastes that taste great together.
When I was self-employed, I did a few different projects, including this one, one aspect of which was my first and only paid column over here. There was also this project, which was much less sprawling, and didn’t include the podcast I did for these people. Before that, I was here (but when it was cool–er, Alliance Atlantis).
Somewhere in there, I had a kid. Which has nothing to do with my professional life, of course. However, I would like to take this opportunity to reassure you that you will never find a photo of said child online, not until the child is old enough to consent to that (yes, for someone who has had multiple websites under her belt, I am so into the privacy thing).
Aaaaanyway, in the blur of those years, I wrote a chapter that’s here and created a few freelance pieces for these nice people (I also did a piece for Q and Spark, but, um, it was clear that that was not going to be a long-term relationship). And I did some unpaid work that I was just really proud of for these smart women and some revolutionary types.
Before that, I did this, over here, and taught political science with these folks. Although I didn’t know it then, doing my doctorate was when I REALLY had time to do stuff, like travel (thanks to the good samaritans who helped fund my degree!), become well-versed in the woo-woo, think big thoughts, go to the movies (I mean, explore cinema), and commit to saving the world via writing. I also married a lovely person in a funny little chapel.
Much of my professionalization happened while in graduate school–though the job was certainly incomplete! But before grad school, there was the year I spent in a funny little Czech town. There was also the excitement of being a part of this, and this publication, and this publication (not to mention my crappy little radio show for this station here). Comms has always been in my blood–though I feel like it’s best usage has been in my policy work.
